Kevin Gault began experimenting with electronics and learning guitar

THE LUTHIER |
Kevin worked as a professional musician for 10 years between 1983-1993, nominated twice for the San Diego Music Award, and winning in 1992 with his group Nemesis for Best Nightclub Rock before he became a Christian and retired to start a family, taking up guitar repair full time (long time friend Dan Altilio of Top Gear Guitar Pro Shop in San Diego inspired Kevin to pick up the trade). In 1993 Kevin and his wife moved to St. Paul, MN, and Kevin took a position at Eclipse Concert Systems managing their new St. Louis Park shop, repairing instruments and rigging sound systems. From 1994-1998 he apprenticed with Martin Reynolds, luthier, at General Music in St. Paul, MN, and well known throughout the twin cities as the best place to take an ailing guitar (Kevin had to promise to forget everything he ever knew before Marty would take him on). Somewhere along the way, a friend offered to sell him a 1964 Super Reverb amp that wasn’t working for only $200, so Kevin bought a book and taught himself amp repair. In 1998 Kevin’s wife Karin decided she’d had enough snow for ten lifetimes and convinced him to return to Southern California (“I’m going home! Are you coming?!?” Nuff-said), so the Gaults returned and set up shop in Murrieta, CA. Kevin was fortunate to find a job working for Suhr Guitars in Lake Elsinore as the 4th man just as John Suhr was getting established. It was a humbling experience for a “hotshot” guitar builder, but never having worked in a world-class guitar factory, Kevin learned how perfect a boutique guitar should be, skills that he continues to perfect to the present day. When the cost of living in Southern California proved too high to survive on a guitar builder’s wages, Kevin took a second job to make ends meet, and started his own guitar repair business. Today, Valley Musician’s Repair is known throughout the Inland
Empire as a reliable repair resource to professional musicians and collectors
alike, receiving referrals from local music shops throughout Riverside
and San Bernardino Counties, and even a few from out-of-state. The
mission is simple: fix it right and give great service. |
